He had built a pavilion at the door of his house and invited the community of monks led by Buddha. He made them sit in the pavilion seats prepared and delicious food offered different tastes. Habiéndolos invited for seven days in a row, won the seventh day all the requirements for five hundred monks presided by the Buddha. The Master, the end of the meal, expressing his gratitude said: "Devoto, it is appropriate that you experience joy and happiness. Because this genus belongs to the lineage of sages of old. The sages of old, when they came begging, gave up his life and gave even his own flesh. " Y at the request of a devotee told the story of the past.
In the past, when Brahmadatta Baranasi reigned in the Bodhisatta [2] was born as a hare and lived in the forest. On one side of the forest was the foot of a mountain, on the other side was a river and on the other side was a frontier town. Also there lived three friends: a monkey, a jackal and otter. These four scholars lived together, got food in their respective places and in the evening they met. The wise hare urged his three companions with a discussion of the Dhamma: "You have to practice generosity, observing precepts, and perform acts of Uposatha." [3] They then accept his exhortation withdrew to their own homes and lived there. So time passed. One day the Bodhisatta looked at the sky, saw the moon, he realized "Tomorrow is the day of Uposatha" and told the other three: "Tomorrow is Uposatha, you three people should observe the precepts and Uposatha day. Having settled in the precepts, the donation given produces great fruit. Therefore, if a beggar comes, they should take their own food. They agreed, saying "very well" and withdrew to their places of residence.
The next day, early, otter thinking "look for food" came out and went to the riverbank. So a fisherman had taken seven red fish. After strung on a reed, brought, made a hole in the sand on the shore of the river, buried them and continued to fish downstream. The otter could smell fishy, \u200b\u200bdug in the sand, saw them and brought them out. Three times announced: "Who owns it?" Not seeing the owner, bit the end of the reed with the fish, took them and put them in his home reflecting on his commandments: "The eat at the appropriate time."
The jackal also left his place of residence and looking for food found in the hut of a field watchman two stakes with meat, a iguana and a jug of milk curd. Three times announced: "Who owns it?" Not seeing the owner, placed the rope around her neck to lift the jug of milk curd, bit the two stakes and iguana meat, took all this and put it in his home reflecting on its precepts: "I eat at the appropriate time."
The monkey also left his place of residence, entered the mountain, took a branch with handles, carried and kept in his home reflecting on his commandments: "The eat at the appropriate time."
The Bodhisatta lying in his own home he thought: "I'm going out to eat grass at the right time. If someone comes to ask, is not possible to grass. I have no sesame or rice or anything to give. If someone comes to me, give the flesh of my own body. " At that time, by the power of the throne under Bodhisatta Sakka stone [4] showed signs of heat. Sakka, investigating, he saw reason and thought, "will investigate the hare king." But first was the residence of the otter under the guise of a Brahmin. The otter wise said: "Brahman, why come?" "If I can get some food, Uposatha observe." Otter said "well, I'll give my food" and talking to him gave the first verse:
My seven red fish, pulled from the water to land, this, brahmin, I have. After eating, living in the forest.
The Brahmin said, "then see" and went to the jackal. When the jackal said, "Why do you come?" The Brahman said the same thing. The jackal said, "well, I'll give" and conversing with the Brahmin gave the second verse:
Dinner a field watchman I brought two sticks of meat, an iguana and a jug of milk curd. This, brahmin, I have. After eating, living in the forest.
The Brahmin said, "then see" and went to see the monkey. When the monkey asked "Why do you come?" The Brahman said the same thing. The monkey said "well, I'll give" and conversing with the Brahmin gave the third verse:
Mango ripe, fresh water and a delightful shade, this, brahmin, I have. After eating, living in the forest.
The Brahmin said, "then see" and went to the free wise. When the hare asked, "Why do you come?" The Brahman said the same thing. Having heard the Bodhisatta was filled with joy, saying: "Brahmin, you've done well to come to my presence to ask for food. Today, I will never say something before. You because virtuoso not kill you. Va, Brahman, wooden board, prepare a fire and inform me. I resign myself and cast myself in the midst of the fire. When my body is cooked, you can eat my flesh and then watch the Dhamma of the ascetics. " And talking to the Brahmin gave the fourth verse:
The hare has no sesame seeds or peas or even rice. After I cooked with this fire, lives in the forest.
After listening to Bodhisatta, Sakka prepared a pile of coals using their supernatural powers and reported it. The Bodhisatta rose from his bed of grass and it was there. "If there are bugs in my skin, they do not die," shook his body three times and offering his whole body was released and dropped onto the stack of coals rejoicing like a real swan in a lake of lotuses. But that fire could not burn even the mere tips of the hairs on the skin of Bodhisatta. It was like walking into a matrix of ice. Then, he went to Sakka: "Brahman, the fire that you have prepared is very cold. Could not even singe the hairs on my skin. What is this? ". "Hare wise, I am not a Brahmin, I am Sakka. I came to prove. " The Bodhisatta delivered the lion's roar: "Sakka, you're the first. But if all the inhabitants of the world were to prove my generosity, not find Never in my unwillingness to give. "
Then Sakka said, "Hare knew that your virtues are known for an eon." And after grinding the mountain, took the essence and drew the shape of the rabbit in the moon's disk. Took the Bodhisatta and laid him on a bed of tender herbs in the same place on that mountain, in the forest, and returned to heaven. And these four sages, in harmony and peace, observing the precepts, practicing generosity and the acts of Uposatha, split according to their actions.
Master after relating this Dhamma discourse revealed the truth and showed the connection of history. At the end of the truths, the donor homeowner all the requirements established in the fruition of stream-entry.
At that time the otter was Ananda, the Jackal was Moggallana, the monkey was Sariputta and the hare knew was myself.
